what are your thoughts on Berkman? he's headed into his age 32 season and given his fluctuations in recent years, i'm not positive he's got another .300/40/120 season in him. his list of comparables at Baseball Reference is littered with guys who started to go downhill in their early-mid 30s, some at age 32 and some a year or 2 later. i'm in a league where we do 3 keepers, and i'm not sure whether i should keep him over Carlos Pena (no sure thing himself).
ReplyDeleteI gave berkman the benefit of the doubt for last season. He played with an injured forearm for most of the season. He still gets on base and I expect him to have another 300/400/500 season. HRs and RBIs will follow that effort.
ReplyDeleteIf he doesn't, and you rightly point out the possibility, then he moves into the $20s.
For 2008, I'd take the Berkman's proven production over Pena's one season. But, like, you I can't shake the thought of losing out on Pena repeating last season's efforts.
FWIW, I've looked at the follow-up season for players who hit 40 HRs and the average change the following season is more than negative 20%. Recent history doesn't favor Carlos topping 40.
