Day 60

Notes from yesterday:

Mariano saved last nights victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. If he can get another save tongiht, he will finish the first two months of the season with five.

*

Armando Benitez was rested last night, and Brad Hennessey got the save. He is a must-add if you speculate on saves as I do.

*

Elijah Dukes hit his 10th HR last night. He is amongst the league leaders in this power-deprived season.

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Day 59

Notes from yesterday:

Shaun Marcum baffled the Yankees for six innings and has been nothing but great in his four starts. I want to believe.

*

The Yankees are now 8 games under .500 with 102 left to play. To finish at .500, they must 60-42. Is it too soon to say the Yanks are going to have a hard time winning 85?

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Day 57

Notes from yesterday:

Kevin Gregg has earned the closer job and nothing in his numbers disputes that.

*

Jack Cust's flower has bloomed. His sub.250 AVG is now a major consideration in his value.

Monday, May 28, 2007

Day 56

Notes from yesterday:

Devil Rays' closer Al Reyes pitched the 9th inning of an 11-5 game. If Madden continues to over-use Reyes, consider selling high.

*

Mark Reynolds is batting clean-up for the Diamondbacks and doing well. Consider trading for him under the auspices that he's going to lose his PT when Chad Tracy returns. 1B Conor Jackson may be the bigger loser.

Sunday, May 27, 2007

Day 55

Notes from yesterday:

Jack Cust is hitting .246 after yesterday's oh-fer. There is very little time left to get quality value for him.

*

Fred Lewis is down to .278. He should remain a decent NL-only play until Dave Roberts returns, but do not be surprised to see him lose a couple starts to fellow rookie Dan Ortmeier who is hitting .375 over the same time period.

Saturday, May 26, 2007

Day 54

Notes from yesterday:

The Mets and Marlins were involved in a pitcher's duel through eight innings. I only saw the final score of 6-2. As a Gregg owner, I worried he pitched in the 5-run 9th. He didn't and he lives to close another day.

*

Rookie Mark Reynolds went 5-5 and is now hitting .459. If he doesn't take over the uber-utility role from Alberto Callaspo when 3B Chad Tracey returns, my opinions of justice will take a hit.

*

The Giants performed right on schedule. Matt Cain pitched and the bullpen blew the Win.

*

Can someone explain why Brian Stokes is in the major leagues?

Friday, May 25, 2007

Day 53

Notes from yesterday:

Micah Owings threw a gem - 8 IP and 1 ER. What surprised me is his ERA didn't drop below 4.00. That is a signal that any one great performance won't be enough to move the standings.

Thursday, May 24, 2007

Day 52

Notes from yesterday:

Alan Embree pitched the 9th in a 4-0 win. Bob geren is going to do it. He is going to make Embree the closer!

*

Jack Cust went 0-3 with three Ks and is 0-6 in the past two games. If you haven't dealt him for less risky value, doing so now would be wise. His AVG is .273. If it gets to .250 - just an 0-5 away - then you won't get anything solid.

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Day 51

Notes from yesterday:

Tim Lincecum looks like the real deal. Remember that performance was against the same team he faced in his previous start. Adjustment couldn't be fresher: yet the Astros still couldn't produce anything.

*

Mike Mussina's pitching line was ugly. If he a 4th or 5th starter now, the Yanks season is going to need more than Botox to start looking better.

*

Related to Lincecum, there is no one to challenge Armando Benitez for saves on the Giants' major league roster. He's as safe a closer as any.

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Day 50

Notes from yesterday:

Rob Neyer has finally noticed Joe Blanton's 2007 season. The timing is impeccable following last night's six-run appearance. He did K 4 and walk none though.

*

Anyone notice that Carlos lee is producing exactly what he is getting paid for?

Monday, May 21, 2007

Day 49

Notes from yesterday:

Tyler Clippard pitched a gem in his major league debut. At 88-90 MPH, can anyone expect him to run his streak to two-in-a-row versus the Angels this weekend?

*

The Cubs are changing closers for a reason not yet known. Angel Guzman and Carlos Marmol look to be the favorites to do the job. $13MM on Bobby Howry?

*

With his HR yesterday, David Wright now has 7 HRs on the sseason after hitting none in April.

Sunday, May 20, 2007

Day 48

Notes from yesterday:

Scott Baker pitched an absolute gem - W, 8.1 IP, 6H, 0BB and 5K. Post-hype sleeper?

*

Shaun Marcum ran his hitless inning streak to 10 before allowing a Chase Utley HR in the 5th. He still pitched nicely with 6 IP, 1K and 1 BB. In his two starts, he has struck out 13 in 12 IP. On the season, he has 35 K in 28.1 IP.

Saturday, May 19, 2007

Day 47

Notes from yesterday:

Andrew Miller pitched a gem. He is supposed to be an extreme groundball pitcher but only had 7 GOs to 9 FOs to 2 Ks in his 18 outs.

*

The Twins recalled failed sleeper prospect Scott Baker. Will he be a post-hype sleeper?

*

Reggie Willits just keeps producing. His AVG is north of .350 and his OBP is north of .400. With 9 SB, he is a fantasy keeper. No way he doesn't get 400+ ABs this season.

*

Anyone else notice Grady Sizemore has 15 SBs already?

Friday, May 18, 2007

Day 46

Notes from yesterday:

Tim Lincecum struck out 10 in seven innings against the Astros. His first game seems to be have been a case of nerves.

*

Elijah Dukes is going to get the opportunity to play CF everyday following the injury to Rocco Baldelli. If he continues to hit .220 and get caught stealing, he will lose PT and much of his 2007 fantasy value.

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Day 45

Notes from yesterday:

Am I the only person who finds beauty in a complete game boxscore? AJ Burnett did it yesterday, and it looked great.

*

Kevin Gregg saved yesterday's Marlins game. After following the Marlins closely, my guess is Lee Gardner gets the next one.

*

Joe Blanton struck out 7 in 8 great innings. Whatever he did between last year and this is for real.

*

John Lackey won his 6th game. He remains my favorite for the AL CY Young.

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Day 44

Notes from yesterday:

The Giants Fred Lewis went 2-5 and looks like a decent short-term gamble. He has some power and a lot of speed as evidenced by his double-digit totals in 2B, 3B and HR in AAA last year. He stole 18 last year but 30+ in the three preceding ones. His walks totals are good enough to think he will be able to take them as a pro.

*

In the never-concluded saga of Florida closers, Kevin Gregg pitched the 9th in a 9-3 win.

*

Armando Benitez blew a save tonight. I expect this situation to develop.

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Day 43

Notes from yesterday:

Dice-K threw a complete game gem versus the Tigers. Maybe he has adjusted to the adjustment the league made to him?

*

I notice the Yankees have the top two hitters by AVG and are still under .500.

Monday, May 14, 2007

Day 42

Notes from yesterday:

OF Carlos Gomez was recalled by the Mets and immediately stole a base. He should be watched very closely.

*

OF Fred Lewis hit for the cycle, and OF Dan Ortmeier went 2-5 for the Giants. Both post-hype prospects are worth watching.

*

Jack Cust has homered so many times this week that he is probably unavailable in all formats.

Sunday, May 13, 2007

Day 41

Notes from yesterday:

Bartolo Colon pitched another good game. Has any pitcher returned from rotator cuff surgery so quickly ans so successfully?

*

Yankees rookie pitcher Matt DeSalvo gave the Yankees 6.2 quality innings. Yet, Joe Torre used three relievers. The bullpen is a trainwreck waiting to happen in no small part due to Joe Torre.

*

JJ Hardy hit his 11th HR yesterday. Is there a single fantasy player who would trade for Hardy based on that number?

*

This may surprise you, but the Boston Red Sox are stealing bases. Julio Lugo has 11 now, and Coco Crisp has seven. The team ranks 6th in the AL.

Saturday, May 12, 2007

Day 40

Notes from yesterday:

Like super prospect Phil Hughes before him, Giants rookie Tim Lincecum pitched a very good second start - 7IP/8RA/2ER/6K.

*

Jeremy Accardo pitched the 9th for the Jays, but it wasn't a save situation. However, that is a signal that he is the lead dog in the race to get the most saves.

*

John Lackey won his 5th game. If he can get to 17W and the Angels make the play-offs, he will be the 2007 CY Young award winner. He's been a very good AL pitcher but has never won the games his stats would indicate - 13 & 14 the past two seasons with 200+ IP and 190+ Ks.

Friday, May 11, 2007

Day 39

Notes from yesterday:

Brandon McCarthy pitched his second consecutive good game. However, his entire season prior was horrendous and is still reflected in his stats. He is someone to keep an eye on, and, if you believe already, to get.

*

The Blue Jays are going with a closer-by-commitee. According to the Toronto Sun, this will be made-up of Jeremy Accardo, Scott Downs and Casey Jannsen. That's right. No Jason Frasor.

Thursday, May 10, 2007

Day 38

Notes from yesterday:

No sooner does Chris Duncan move to the clean-up spot and Ryan Ludwick moves to the two-hole than Cards manager Tony LaRussa changes his mind.

*

The Yankees got another quality start. Unfortunately, Joe Torre used 5 relievers to finish the last three innings. What are the Yankees going to trade for a couple of reliever this July?

Wednesday, May 09, 2007

Day 37

Notes from yesterday:

After batting 5th for the Cardinals, recent AAA call-up Ryan Ludwick was batting second in front of Albert Pujols. If there is anything to that, then Ludwick has a chance to be more valuable than anyone could have imagined entering 2007.

*

The Yankees got their fourth consecutive quality start from their pitching staff.

Tuesday, May 08, 2007

Day 36

Notes from yesterday:

Kyle Farnsworth and Mariano Rivera (and some umpiring help) combined to blow the win for rookie Matt DeSalvo. If Mariano is hurting, then there is no one to close games in NY.

*

Ryan Ludwick batted 5th for the Cardinals. It is shaping-up as a real long season for the WS champs.

*

Who is Zack McClellan? 13 K in 11 IP is worth keeping an eye on.

*

Jorge Julio had his first scoreless appearance as a Marlin - including Spring Training! The Marlins are paying him $2.6MM and the team is coy enough about the closer job to keep fantasy owners watching him.

Monday, May 07, 2007

Day 35

Notes from yesterday:

Roger Clemens dramatically announced his return to the Yankees during the seventh inning stretch at the stadium. There is no reason to believe he won't be one of the best FAAB players this season.

*

Joe Blanton won again. He gave-up a lot of hits, but still struck out six. The increase in Ks is real enough. I think he is a 15W sub-4.00 ERA pitcher for 2007.

*

Josh Hamilton has 8 HRs now. Even if the league catches-up to him, he is worth believing-in anyways.

*

Alphonso Soriano made an appearance at 2B. Woo hoo!

Sunday, May 06, 2007

Day 34

Notes from yesterday:

Shane Victorino stole bags 12 and 13. Yet Michael Bourn only has one.

*

Chein-Ming Wang was a strikeout machine. He K'ed four.

*

Brad Hennessey pitched in the 8th for the second consecutive game. He looks like someone to watch.

Saturday, May 05, 2007

Day 33

Notes from yesterday:

Reggie Willits is the new lead-off hitter in Anaheim following the injury to Garrett Anderson. Grab him now in AL-only leagues and mixed ones in need of AVG and SB.

*

Billy Butler is now eligible at 1B in traditional rotisserie leagues, and he has a nifty .438 AVG to boot.

*

Shane Victorino stole his 10th and 11th bases of the season. No one could see that based on his 2006 total of 4.

Friday, May 04, 2007

Day 32

Notes from yesterday:

JC Romero got the save for the Red Sox. Is there something wrong with Papelbon?

*

Joes Valverde blew a save in spectacular fashion. Is this the beginning of his annual sabbatical from the closer's role?

*

Mariano Rivera saved both ends of yesterday's double-header. If the Yanks have another opportunity tonight, it will be interesting to see who gets the chance.

Thursday, May 03, 2007

Day 31

Notes from yesterday:

Alfonzo Soriano hit his 2nd HR of the season. (I can't believe he spells his name with a "f" and not a "ph"!)

*

Carl Pavano looks like he's out for a long time. I'm tired of the jokes at his expense.

*

Tom Gordon is getting his shoulder checked. Assumign Myers moves to the 9th, the Phils are back where they started prior to Myers move to the bullpen - a reliable 9th inning arm with nothing in front of him.

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Day 30

Notes from yesterday:

On the 1st of May, Alphonso Soriano, Jacques Jones and David Wright hit their first home runs of the 2007 season.

*

Adam Dunn stole his 6th base last night.

*

Not to take anything away from Philip Hughes, but Victor Diaz was batting clean-up for the Rangers - a couple hours after being recalled from AAA.

Tuesday, May 01, 2007

Day 29

Notes from yesterday:

Kenny Lofton stole his 11th base of the season. Fountain of Youth? Sell high? 40+ SB season? No idea, but he has been a quite an over-achiever so far.

*

John Lackey won his 4th game of the season. With the Dice-K hype, he is going to be forgotten by East Coast denizens. He was my pre-season pick for AL CY Young (and I put $28 on him at the draft to support that.)

*

Troy Tulowitzki went 4-4 and brought his AVG up to .244. He looks safe. Now teammate Chris Iannetta needs to get a few good games in a row under his belt to save his.
