Fantasy Baseball: The New Oakland A's
The oakland A's have spent a couple of seasons dealing viable major leaguers for prospects without regard for organizational depth charts. The teams has lots of starting pitchers and outfielders and few infielders.
The team that looks like it is going down the same path is the Cleveland Indians who dealt two of their three best players, LHP Cliff Lee and C/1B Victor Martinez, for eight prospects. Does the team really need C Lou Marson with Carlos Santana the heir apparent at the position? Or AAA infielder Jason Donald when Asdrubel Cabrera and Luis Valbuena have SS and 2B covered?
I wonder if Billy Beane and his adherents are missing latest values in baseball - established major leaguers - while other teams are recognizing the most over-valued ones are prospects.

Tribe infield could see shift - Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball News - cleveland.com:
"The two big moves that may or may not take place involve All-Star catcher Victor Martinez becoming a semiregular first baseman and an infield shift that would send Jhonny Peralta from short to third, Asdrubal Cabrera from second to short and Mark DeRosa from third to second."
Kick-up the value of C Kelly Shoppach. Drop the value of 1B Ryan Garko. Watch out Shin-Soo Choo, Dave Dellucci and Ben Francsico. Matt LaPorta has to play somewhere, and Travis Hafner has $48MM reasons over the next four seasons why it won't be DH.

MLB Rumors: Cleveland Indians
After a strong year, suitors may be plentiful for Casey at the bat - Cleveland Indians Major League Baseball News - cleveland.com:
"If the Indians add a third baseman, be it Blake or someone else, Jhonny Peralta would stay at short and Asdrubal Cabrera at second. If they add a second baseman, they would have to move Peralta to third and Cabrera to short."
Given the utter weakness of power at SS, I prefer Jhonny Peralta with SS-eligibility. If it means signing Casey blake, then the Indians have to do it!

There's A New Rightfielder In Cleveland
From this morning's Cleveland Plain Dealer:
"Right fielder Franklin Gutierrez, sitting for his fifth straight start, was not.
What happened to Gutierrez?
'Ben Francisco happened to him,' Wedge said. 'Benny has come up and swung the bat well and taken some time away from him.'
Francisco is one of the few Indians hitters who looks like he has a clue at the plate, and is hitting .340. He's taken over right field, while Gutierrez appears to be David Dellucci's latest platoon partner in left."
Gutierrez was a sexy sleeper coming off his 2007 season where he hit 13 HRs and stole 8 bases in 271 ABs. Given the RF job this Spring, there was no reason to believe otherwise.
Now that he has struggled for the 1st quarter of 2008, along with the rest of the Indians' offense, he has been supplanted by rookie Ben Francisco. I do not see Francisco as too much of a different player so do not be surprised to see Gutierrez regain those ABs if Francisco struggles as most rookies do.
Both players should be owned in all but the most shallow of AL-Only formats.
