I could have titled the post "Killing Fantasy Sleepers Brett Gardner Version". There is no way Gardner gets anywhere near the necessary ABs with Winn and a righty-hitting thumper in town.

MLB Trade Rumors: Johnny Damon & New York Yankees
Buster Olney at ESPN.com:
"Two things have to happen in order for Johnny Damon to re-sign with the Yankees. First, he must greatly reduce his asking price, and secondly, Hal Steinbrenner must agree to expand the team's budget. In the past, George Steinbrenner would've done this without blinking, but Hal Steinbrenner has taken more of a business-oriented approach, and it's not a sure thing that Hal would approve such a request about Damon. But because Aubrey Huff has signed with the Giants -- with the possible ripples meaning that Mark DeRosa could be a semi-regular left fielder -- and with the Braves seemingly lukewarm on the notion of pursuing Damon, the veteran outfielder doesn't have a lot of good options."
I'm thinking Johnny Damon needs to be Adrian beltra creative and sign for a larger one-year deal with a reduced second year option i.e. $8 MM in 2010 with a player option for $4 MM.

Buster Olney mongers a Yankees rumor in the way bloggers get excoriated doing.
"And they are moving closer to a deal for somebody.
Who? As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, I'm not sure.
A free agent? The best of the remaining starters, Joel Pineiro and Vicente Padilla, figure to cost something in the range of $7 million to $10 million a year....There are the usual suspects of salary-dump players, like Derek Lowe of the Braves, or Aaron Harang, who the Yankees would've taken in a mid-summer deal with the Reds if Cincinnati hadn't stuck to its demand for big-time prospects. Javy Vazquez could be a fit, if the Yankees were willing to consider bringing back a player who failed with them before....The Yankees could also target some arbitration-eligible pitchers who would cost them good young players, like a Josh Johnson, John Danks or Jorge de la Rosa (to be clear, this is pure speculation, but these are the sort of pitchers that the Yankees typically go after). Maybe it's a second-tier arbitration-eligible pitcher, like Joe Blanton...."

Brett Gardner

"Brett Gardner, OF, Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre (Yankees)
Gardner just keeps on plugging along. He had two hits on Friday and three more on Saturday, and while he went without a safety on Sunday, he made up for it with four walks, a pair of stolen bases, and three runs scored. Now batting .292/.408/.436 in 73 games for the SWB Yanks, Garner is an 80 runner with outstanding defense and on-base skills. While Melky Cabrera is a popular player and all, doesn’t it seem like Gardner could provide more production both offensively and defensively at this point? It might not be the most popular decision, but if the Yankees are going to make a run at the postseason, it might take some risky maneuvers."
Appearing in Baseball Prospectus will get the drum beating for Gardner.
