With 1B Adam LaRoche signed to be the Arizona Diamondbacks' 1B, former 1B Conor Jackson moves to LF. That sets up a chain reaction that will have either Gerardo Parra or Chris Young going to the bench to sit with Eric Byrnes.
The New York Mets find themsleves in need of centerfield help following Carlos beltran's knee surgery. With nowhere to turn in the free agent market, wouldn't it behoove GM Omar Minaya to call-up Josh Byrnes and inquire about Chris Young?

MLB Trade Rumors: New York Mets & Chicago Cubs Trade
After the Chicago Cubs signed CF Marlon Byrd, word came out the team was in search of back-end rotation help along with bullpen assistance. I quipped the nothing exciting was happening unless the team found a way to unload the $54MM owed to SP Carlos Zambrano over the next three years.
So as I cleaned up the driveway of snow and slush, I was listening to Talking Baseball Live podcast, and Paul Greco dropped real names in a potential trade. He gleaned this info through his Mets contacts at Baseball Digest Daily.
The rumored offer was Carlos Zambrano for 2B Luis Castillo, AAA OF Fernando martinez and a AA prospect.

Fantasy Baseball: New York Mets Off-Season Plans
As I commented at Rotosynthesis, if we knew the true extant of the Wilpons' loses to Bernie Madoff and their real estate portfolio, we can make more educated guesses about what the New York Mets plan to do for 2010. Like the balance sheets of big banks, assume it is worse than reported. In this case, the Mets will likely play for today but with bottom-of-the-barrel veterans who make 1B Adam LaRoche look like Albert Pujols.
What the team needs to do is something close to what Baltimore did two seasons ago and deal the high priced talent for players in 2011. The players competing for the role of Erik Bedard are Johan Santana (too obvious), Carlos Beltran (they wish) and the brilliant left side of the infield, 3B David Wright and SS Jose Reyes.

Billy Wagner to Boston Red Sox: Nix option to seal deal - ESPN:
"Billy Wagner wants to be a closer next season, regardless of the team. That's why the New York Mets reliever says Boston must guarantee it will decline his contract option for 2010 before he would approve a potential trade to the Red Sox, who already have an All-Star closer in Jonathan Papelbon."
The team who had him in my NL-only was in the hospital for the birth of his 1st child at the trade deadline. In my AL-Only, I am willing to spend to get the chance at a 2010 closer on the cheap.

Fantasy Baseball Surprises
St. Louis Cardinals' 2B Mark DeRosa has 21 HRs this season. With 2B, 3B, and OF eligibility for next season, expect DeRosa to be a $20+ player in single league drafts. Amazing.
I traded for Francisco Rodriguez a month or so ago. After his five earned runs/ zero outs effort last night. He has allowed 15 earned runs in 15.1 innings ons my team.

Day 120 And Counting
Ken Rosenthal was on WFAN in NY this morning and said he believes Santana will be dealt this weekend to either the Yankees or Red Sox. Here are some other rumors and rumors-related info.
Clark Spencer provides more proof the Marlins are hurting their possibility of dealing Miguel Cabrera. He writes:
''I hate to speak to somebody else's business, but you wonder if they really want to trade the player or if they absolutely, positively have to win the deal in such a one-sided fashion,'' San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean said during a conference call Thursday with reporters."
Peter Gammons mentions the Diamondbacks as favorites to land Danny Haren, the Brewers to get Scott Rolen and the Dodgers to sign Arron Rowand while keeping all their hot properties.
Troy Renck: "...the Rockies don't like their chances, believing he will end up with the Yankees. While that deal is close, Loretta has made it known how much he likes the Rockies and would prefer to see how their second base..."

The A's are not shopping Haren and Blanton, sources say, but will listen intently if rival clubs wish to acquire either or both in trades.
What's more, the A's are no longer as interested in Mets outfielder Lastings Milledge and right-hander Aaron Heilman as they were when they tried to acquire both in a package for left-hander Barry Zito before the non-waiver deadline in 2006."
