ESPN's Buster Olney on Jason Bay:
"One source indicated Wednesday night that the [Boston Red Sox] has less than $5 million in spending money. Short of blowing up their budget, the only way the Red Sox could work something out with Bay would be to find a way to dump some existing contracts, such as the newly signed Mike Cameron (who would have to lend his permission to such an arrangement)."
Someone is blowing smoke. Otherwise, the state of the baseball economy is teetering on collapse.

Ray here-I am starting to think the same as the Angels and Dodgers are not spending this offseason. They must be worried about the economy in California in 2010. CA is in bankrupcy right now no? But Boston? Did John Henry lose alot in his futures trading accounts?
If you look at their payroll they are near lux tax limit..so $5 mil is about right.
What is surprising about this? They've held at the lux tax line pretty consistently.
What is surprising is the Red Sox would divulge to the press that they can't afford more. It sounds disingenuous.
