Smartest Reason I've Seen To Keep Strasburg In Minors

Baseball Prospectus | One-Hoppers: Don't start Strasburg's clock yet:

"The Nationals will probably have to overpay a few free agents to come to DC if they want a shot at respectability, and even in a best-case scenario are a few years away from contention. They could use all the savings they can get their hands on, and having an ace pitcher who makes the league minimum is a heck of a savings plan."

except of course Strasburg doesn't make the league minimum...he makes 2 million this year, 2.5 in 2011 and 3 in 2012. So what would happen in 2013? I think he is then arb eligible...

true but his six years of control remains the same and begins when he gets called up. As is the Nats pay him during his pre-arb years.

yes...but he is not league minimum

Maybe quote was wrong but intent was right!

The Nats will have an extra year of control albeit at arbitration prices.

Of course, arbitration is a broken systyem so it may all be moot.
