what are your thoughts on Berkman? he's headed into his age 32 season and given his fluctuations in recent years, i'm not positive he's got another .300/40/120 season in him. his list of comparables at Baseball Reference is littered with guys who started to go downhill in their early-mid 30s, some at age 32 and some a year or 2 later. i'm in a league where we do 3 keepers, and i'm not sure whether i should keep him over Carlos Pena (no sure thing himself).
I gave berkman the benefit of the doubt for last season. He played with an injured forearm for most of the season. He still gets on base and I expect him to have another 300/400/500 season. HRs and RBIs will follow that effort.
If he doesn't, and you rightly point out the possibility, then he moves into the $20s.
For 2008, I'd take the Berkman's proven production over Pena's one season. But, like, you I can't shake the thought of losing out on Pena repeating last season's efforts.
FWIW, I've looked at the follow-up season for players who hit 40 HRs and the average change the following season is more than negative 20%. Recent history doesn't favor Carlos topping 40.
