Zach Duke and Pat Maholm

Bucco Blog: Evaluating Rookie Pitchers Second Year Potential

Some good work by Bucco on likely 2006 performance of Duke and Maholm.

Duke at 3.38 would justify all the hype. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if it were a little higher.

Maholm at 4.04 seems a little too good, but I don't expect him to fail. He does not have a lot of minor league innings and, those he does have, he did not dominate. The ERA is very attractive (2.85) but 74 striekouts and 36 walks in 94.2 innings is not.

Update: Thank you to a commentator for pointing out that the current Pirate pitcher is Paul Maholm not Pat. If only I had titled the post "Duke and Maholm"....and if Woody had gone straight to the police...

If Pat Maholm came close to a 6.00 ERA it would be miracle. Pat Maholhm has been retired for years now and never made it past the prospect status he garnered in the early 90's, however Paul Maholm, who pitches for the Pirates, will be decent. I would expect an ERA around 4.25.
